Academic Year Courses


Our Academic year programme is for students who wish to focus on their English language in an English speaking environment and gain a thorough knowledge of English through committing to a longer course of study.  The course allows students to develop their English language and academic study skills before stating a degree programme, or starting a professional career.

Suitable for: This skills based course is designed for students who will be attending university level courses at undergraduate and post graduate levels, particularly in the English language environment.  Also suited to students taking a gap year from their studies or study leave from work.
Course options: 20 or 30 lessons per week (lesson length is 45 minutes)
Lesson times:

20 lessons per week: 11.00am - 12.30pm, 1.00pm - 2.30pm
30 lessons per week: 9.00am - 10.30am, 11.00am - 12.30pm, 1.00pm - 2.30pm

Course structure: 20 lessons per week: 2 lessons per day of Academic English, 2 lessons per day of General English
30 lessons per week: 2 lessons per day of Academic English, 4 lessons per day of General English
Class size maximum: General English: 10 students during the winter, 12 students during the summer
Academic English: 10 students all year round
Start days: Any day of the week from Monday to Friday
Course duration: Minimum 24 weeks
Levels:                             Suggested starting level of students on this course is B1 (Common European Framework) or above
Examinations available: All Cambridge ESOL examinations, IELTS, TOEFL.  Students can also sit for LCCI (London Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and City & Guilds examinations

During the Academic English lessons students will cover the following topics:

Reading skills:              
  • Reading for general understanding as well as specific detail
  • Structure and discourse in academic texts
  • Analysing content of academic texts and critical thinking
  • Identifying unknown vocabulary in context
  • Identifying useful material for essays and presentation               
Writing skills:        
  • Grammatical features of academic writing
  • Academic writing styles
  • Note-taking and producing written work from notes
  • The writing process - planning, revising and editing
  • Techniques for quoting and referencing
  • Written accuracy 
Listening skills:
  • Extended listening and note-taking
  • Listening in seminars and lectures
  • Appropriate responses
  • Recognising relationships between ideas
Speaking skills:
  • Presentation skills
  • Speaking in seminars
  • Expressing agreement and  disagreement
  • Spoken accuracy

Throughout the course students will:

  • Receive academic counselling
  • Attend weekly tutorials to address difficulties
  • Be exposed to different native accents, becoming adept at listening to different speeds
  • Use authentic materials in class
  • Attend pronunciation focus lessons to deal with stress, intonation and the IPA system
  • Learn and activate colloquial language, idioms and phrasal verbs
  • Be motivated to produce accurate and fluent language when speaking and writing
  • Learn English through a variety of topics and themes
